Bill Self and his Kansas Jayhawks seem to find themselves in a very precarious position. For the first time since 2021, they got knocked out as a top 25 team, marking an 80-week run to an end. And that’s not all. Just to rub salt in the wound, they suffered a brutal loss to number 10 Texas Tech on a night that was supposed to be special! The 70th anniversary of the first game played at Allen Fieldhouse!
Are the fans enjoying what they’re seeing? Safe to assume they are not! The very Jayhawks, who started the season as the No. 1 team in the country, find themselves in a new low. Sixth in the Big 12 with a 10-8 conference record! Watching their season unravel like this has to be a tough pill to swallow for fans. After all, it is a program with sky-high expectations.
Naturally, fans have been voicing out their frustration on social media and targeting the Kansas players. This led to Bill Self speaking up for the team. Bill Self released a statement asking the fans to criticize him and not his players, He remarked, “Any criticism about the team should be directed at me. I’m the head coach.”

Instead of calming the situation, it seems to have made things worse. Bill Self’s decision to release a statement only sparked an even bigger debate among fans on social media, with many wondering why Bill Self felt the need to release a statement. Some fans are questioning whether it’s the beginning of the end for Kansas and Bill Self. Meanwhile, others are more focused on why Self is trying to protect his players from criticism. To say the least, the flooded comments and quotes aren’t exactly positive.
Fans left fuming after Bill Self released an apology statement
“Are witnessing the fall of Kansas Basketball? What is going on in Lawrence? When has Bill Self EVER felt the need to release a statement after a loss?” said a shocked fan on X. Mark Titus couldn’t help but join in. He joked, ” We’re one Kansas loss away from Bill Self whipping out a Notes app apology”

Well, looks like we’ve got the reason behind Bill Self’s statement, and it’s far from pleasant. Just a few hours ago, Zeke Mayo released a shocking statement. The Kansas senior guard revealed that he’s been receiving threatening texts following his recent rough performances. “I 100% deserve all the criticism in the world,” he stated. “My performance was beyond pitiful today, and has been for a while now. I work my a** off everyday to be great, but I can’t be perfect all the time. I’m sorry to our fans and my teammates, I will continue to get better,” he said in a statement while sharing the vile messages that were sent to him.
Mayo has recently not been able to perform well. He was shooting less than 25% from the field in his last two games, resulting in an intense backlash from fans on social media. The criticism, however, took a dark turn as fans went beyond just posting comments and started flooding his DMs with abusive messages. A fan reiterated this by saying, “I’m sure a big part of this was due to the heinous messages Zeke Mayo shared on here. Fans can be fans, but there is a line that too many cross across the country and all sports.”
The misery, however, just keeps on piling up for Bill Self. One fan took to X to share a pretty brutal take, saying, ” I get a disturbing amount of joy from watching Bill Self’s highly touted Kansas roster fold like a cheap suit.” Further, a Texas Tech fan criticized the two time NCAA champion by calling out his poor record against ranked teams, “Bill Self is now 0-8 against top 10 teams when Kansas is unranked. Is the guy a fraud???”

Bill Self has undoubtedly been one of the best coaches in the country for a long time now. When Hunter Dickinson, Dajuan Harris, and KJ Adams decided to come back and with Bill Self getting 6 new transfers in, everyone thought this team was primed for a deep postseason run. But now? Well, it’s starting to look like that dream might be slipping further out of reach with every game.
19-10 isn’t the kind of record you expect from a team with championship aspirations. And when you couple that with a rough 5-8 record against Quad 1 teams, it’s clear that Bill Self has a lot of work to do. That is, if he wishes to take his team to the Big Dance. On top of it, when you have been one of the best teams in the country for almost four years, rival fans are bound to celebrate when you fall!
It’s perfectly fine to criticize players when they don’t perform up to expectations. Yes, the Kansas Jayhawks are in uncharted territory, and this core of players has never been in a situation quite like this before. But let’s be clear, it’s never okay to cross the line into ra*ial abuse when things aren’t going well. That kind of behavior needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. Athletes are human beings too and they deserve respect, no matter the outcome on the court.
