One of the best prospects in women’s college basketball, Juju Watkins is setting the NCAA on fire. The 18-year-old shooting guard is making a lot of noise with her presence on the court this season. She added another feather to her cap on Tuesday night as No.6 USC stormed past Cal Poly 85-44.

The dynamic No.12 of the Trojans scripted her name in the record books as she ended her night with 30 points. Following this, she surpassed two of the greatest players in USC’s history, Lisa Leslie and Paula McGee.

The Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, Juju Watkins, has lived up to her hype and expectations in the tournament so far. Watkins landed her fourth 30-point game this season. As a result, she has now left behind WNBA legend Lisa Leslie for the most 30-point games by a freshman in the Trojan’s history. She also secured 4 rebounds and 4 assists, in her 28 minutes on the court. In addition to this, Watkins also had 5 steals and 2 blocks to her name at the end of the night.

Juju Watkins’ bleeding nose didn’t stop her from putting on an exhibition in front of a sold-out Galen Center. The unanimous No. 1 overall recruit had 10 successful attempts out of her 19 from the field. Furthermore, she converted all her seven free throws to embolden her mark.

Watkins made her collegiate debut with a 32-point game against Ohio State. She carried her momentum against Le Moyne in which she finished on 35 points. Soon after, she tied with USC’s greats Lisa Leslie and Paula McGee in a game against Penn State, in which she scored 31 points.

The young star has been a prolific scorer for the Trojans this season. The 6-foot-2 is only behind Iowa’s Caitlin Clark in terms of scoring average this season.

Juju Watkin’s tournament so far

The three-time Pac-12’s Freshman of the Week, Juju Watkins is having a memorable campaign so far. Watkins is currently averaging 26.8 points and 7.5 rebounds along with 3.2 assists per game. The 2023 Naismith Prep Player of the Year also has an impressive field goal percentage of 50.4. Consequently, the Trojans are now ranked 6th in the current poll conducted by the Associated Press. Apparently, this is their best standing since 1994 when Lisa Leslie was playing for them as a senior.

USC will be hoping Watkins carry her form as they host San Diego on Sunday. The 2023 Gatorade National Player of the Year will look to treat the fans with more record-breaking nights.
