In their Big 12 debut, Kansas and TCU were locked in a close contest that required Hunter Dickinson to step up late in the game. Dajuan Harris hit a ball to Dickinson in the low post as the clock was running out and the game was knotted. The big guy dropped the ball to the floor and went up for the game-winning shot as two Horned Frogs defenders were closing in on him.

With only 3.4 seconds remaining, Hunter banked in the ball off the backboard to give the Jayhawks an 83-81 lead. After he made a basket to set up a last play, TCU took a timeout, but KU held on for the victory.

Dominant Dickinson showcased his scoring ability, shooting an impressive 65% from the field to finish with 30 points. His offensive prowess was complemented by his strong presence on the boards, as he grabbed 11 rebounds to secure his ninth double-double of the season.

But despite Dickinson’s outstanding play, TCU put up a tough fight and managed to keep the game close from start to finish. The Horned Frogs were able to stay within striking distance, trailing by just one point, 41-40, at halftime. TCU started the game with a strong lead, and both teams remained evenly matched throughout the first half.

As the game entered its final minutes, TCU found themselves with a slim 79-77 lead with only 1:38 left on the clock. It was at this crucial moment that Ernest Udeh Jr. of TCU made a remarkable play, soaring to retrieve a loose ball that had been thrown high. However, in the process, Udeh accidentally struck Dickinson with his arm as he fell to the ground. The officials promptly blew the whistle and called a flagrant foul, granting Dickinson two free throws to tie the game.

Flagrant foul controversy

The decision to call a flagrant foul was met with some controversy, as CBS rules expert Gene Steratore argued that it should have been deemed a common foul. Nevertheless, Dickinson calmly sank both free throws, leveling the score. With the subsequent possession, the Jayhawks wasted no time and capitalized on the contentious ruling, converting it into a go-ahead shot.
