The LSU Tigers are slowly getting back to their absolute best in the NCAA. The defending champions have given a tremendous display of their impeccable offensive play and have now won 14 games in a row. However, there were still some questions on them struggling with their ability to defend. Well, these questions were answered by their 5 ft 10 in superstar Flau’jae Johnson.

The sophomore guard turned the tides in LSU’s favor Thursday night against the Missouri Tigers. She stepped up and executed one of Kim Mulkey’s plans to perfection.

After the game, Flau’jae Johnson joined the commentators Eric Frede and Christy Thomaskutty to reflect on her performance. Christy said that she heard that Kim Mulkey challenged Johnson personally the day before in practice to grow as a defender. Following this, she asked her if she took those words to heart in the game. To which Flau’jae responded, “I did. After she said that, I went and watched some Michael Jordan. I was like I wanna get on that If I wanna be the type of player that I imagined.”

Johnson gave an out-and-out performance against Missouri. She was a total package as she was able to deliver on the offensive front along with making contributions to LSU’s defense. She further added, “I just kept doing the little things. I don’t just wanna be a scorer. I wanna be somebody who wanna contribute in different ways. Just like a lot of my favorite players.” Johnson was on fire in LSU’s SEC opener. She has the second-best figures for the Lady Tigers with her 24 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Moreover, she has been one of the impactful players in that LSU locker room.

Flau’jae Johnson’s season so far

Flau’jae Johnson is turning out to be one of the trump cards for Kim Mulkey this season. The 2023 SEC Freshman Of The Year is among the top performers in the squad. She has featured in all 14 games for LSU so far and has scored a total of 188 points at an average of 13.4 points per game. In addition to this, she has the third-best accuracy from beyond the arc with a 31.3 success rate. Another impressive stat she pulled this season is her efficiency in free throws. Apparently, she managed to bury 77.3% of her attempts.

There is no denying that Flau’jae Johnson is up there with the likes of Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow and has played a major role in LSU’s overall success. She doesn’t hesitate to take any role that Mulkey demands and contribute to the best of her abilities. Furthermore, she has proven that she won’t back down from any challenge that is put in front of her.
