The introduction of NIL (Name, Image Likeness) deals has changed the face of college sports, sparking strong feelings in many people. This rule allows college athletes to make money based on their name, image and likeness. Coach K recently expressed his disapproval of the influence NIL has had on college sports.

Former Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski took a stand against the NIL rule in a recent interview with Jeff Goodman of ‘The Field of 68.’ He believes that the absence of effective leadership within the NCAA is the primary reason for the current state of college basketball.

He said, “Who can explain NIL? A lot of people can explain it, but you’d have different explanations. There should be one explanation. And we should have it, obviously.”

He continued, “It’s a free market right now. And in a free market, there’s also free interpretation. In order to bring this all back in, it’s going to be very difficult, because how are you going to tell people they can’t do what they’ve been doing?”

Coach K feels that the rules around NIL are unclear and different from place to place, creating confusion and the lack of clear rules has led to a situation where college athletes are essentially being paid to play, similar to professional sports.

He added, “Look, it’s pretty much pay-for-play right now. They don’t want to say that, but it is. More power to them. But how is it equitable? In the NBA, NFL, they all have the same rules, they have a salary cap. Can that ever be done in college?”
