Amir Abdur-Rahim, one of 13 siblings in a blended family and one of six brothers to play college basketball, took the reins as South Florida head coach in March 2023. He arrived at South Florida after achieving an incredible turnaround at Kennesaw State, just north of Atlanta. In his first three seasons with the Owls, he managed only 19 wins. However, he turned the program around dramatically, leading them to a remarkable 26-9 record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2023.

At his introductory news conference, Amir Abdur-Rahim playfully challenged athletic director Michael Kelly, asking, “I asked (Kelly), ‘You afraid of heights? Because you’re going to have to get up on that ladder one day to cut down those nets,’”  Less than a year later, the Bulls were indeed pulling out the ladder. After enduring four straight losing seasons, USF finished an impressive 25-8 last winter.

Before Amir Abdur-Rahim took charge in 2023, the Bulls had never finished at or above .500 in the American Athletic Conference and had achieved that overall only once since 2012. With the help of several Kennesaw State transfers who made the move to Tampa alongside their coach, USF not only clinched the American Athletic Conference regular-season title but the program also found a spot in that top-25 Associated Press ranking for the first time in their history.
