Florida Atlantic are off to a great start as they brushed aside East Carolina 79-64 in their American Athletic Conference opener. A dominant second-half performance inspired by Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin helped the Owls overcome a dull start they had in the opening half.

This performance helps Martin bring his campaign back on track after he was seen struggling in the tournament lately. The Florida Atlantic’s preseason American Athletic Conference co-player of the year joined Davis for game-high scoring honors.

Martin looked out of sorts in the initial moments of the game. He was rusty as he missed his first three shots. Following this, a superb long-range three got his groove on as he was beginning to look confident. 7 seconds later, he buried another three to give a glimpse of his previous season form when he led the Owls to the Final Four. Moreover, the dynamic No.15 landed 4 out of 8 long-range shots and ended his night with 20 points. In addition to this, he also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists along with three steals to his name.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Johnell Davis also played his part magnificently. He was on his game right from the start as he opened the scoring for Florida Atlantic with a picture-perfect beyond-the-arc three. Further, Davis was able to convert 7 out his of 13 shots. Later, he combined with Martin to get the Owls on a 14-0 run in the closing moments of the game. He too bagged 20 points for the night and had 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
