“The last few weeks, we have come to realize this program probably needs to hear another voice,” were John Calipari’s words when he recently announced that he was stepping away from Kentucky. Dedicating 15 good years to the program, Calipari elevated Kentucky’s status to an elite level and transformed it into a powerhouse. Going way back to 2009, it was Calipari’s first season at Kentucky. He led the Wildcats to a remarkable record of 35-3 record and a run to the Elite 8.
Calipari’s ability to recruit top talents like Anthony Davis, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Devin Booker re-booted Kentucky. These players were later drafted into the NBA and have been making a powerful impact ever since. With Calipari heading to a new program, Duke’s former head coach Mike Krzyzewski shares some insights on his bond with Calipari and his head coaching run at Kentucky.

In a recent YouTube video, Duke’s legendary Coach K speaks highly of John Calipari, saying, “John and I are good friends. John’s been great for the game of basketball since Five-Star Basketball Camp when he coached there with Howard Garfinkel and Tom Konchalski. He’s been an icon really in our sport, will continue to be. At Kentucky, I think for 15 years, I think he did a great job at Kentucky.”
John Calipari’s track record at Kentucky includes some remarkable feats like 6 regular season championships, 6 Conference Tournament championships, 12 NCAA tournament appearances, 10 NCAA tournament second round, 8 Sweet 16, 7 Elite 8, 4 Final Four, an NCAA tournament runner-up, and an NCAA national championship title. It is a stellar example of Calipari’s relentless efforts in making Kentucky one of college basketball’s resilient programs.
Moving on, Coach K pressed upon the difference between a winner and a champion, saying, “You know the difference. It’s very difficult winning a national championship. Connecticut seemed to make it like it wasn’t these last two years, but a lot of times you’re one play away or 30 seconds away and I’ll bet if you could give John a minute, he would have won two more national championships. I remember being asked one time what’s the difference between uh being you know a winner and a champion and I said one play you know one one play I mean I can be a winner but not be a champion because you hit the shot that I defended you on or the foul.”
Giving his blessings to Calipari in his future endeavors, Coach K says, “I’m proud of what John did and and I wish him the best at Arkansas.”

John Calipari as Arkansas’ new head coach
Upon his arrival at Arkansas, things appear to be haywire to Calipari, given his recent remark, “There is no team.” This clearly indicates that he will be making good use of the transfer portal in the offseason as there are no scholarship players left on the Razorbacks’ roster.

Former player Eric Musselman has already departed for USC. Similarly, the team’s leading scorers Tramon Mark and Khalif Battle are in the transfer portal. In addition, Trevon Brazile has declared for the 2024 NBA draft with the rest of the players out of eligibility.
Hence, the current situation indicates that Coach Calipari might have to start from scratch to build a competitive Razorbacks roster.
