While serving her prison sentence in Russia, Griner experienced a range of insecurities and anxieties. She worried about her imprisonment and felt a sense of being forgotten. Being isolated in a foreign country for nearly a year triggered a sudden identity crisis for the 32-year-old. However, her spirits were uplifted when she received letters from her fans. Back in the United States, her family and peers launched a letter campaign nationwide, aiming to collect 10 thousand letters for her.

These letters expressed gratitude towards Griner and showcased admiration for her in various aspects. While some letters expressed bitterness about her situation, the majority served as a source of encouragement, boosting her morale and keeping her hope for a return home. “You don?t understand how good it felt to get a letter from your family, from just random people that I have never even met. It just lets you know that you?re not forgotten,” Griner said back in April, according to The Athletic.

She continued, “And it?s so easy to feel forgotten. To feel like no one?s thinking of you. ? It just gives you like a spark of life, to keep holding on, keep fighting, not to give in.”
