NBA records broken during the 2015-16 season

Records are meant to be broken.

This regular season in the NBA has been no exception, with the phenomenal performances of Golden State Warriors, Steph Curry, San Antonio Spurs have tumbled league and franchise records. Teams like Philadelphia, Los Angeles Lakers on the other hand have toppled records that they’d rather have not.

Let’s take a look at the various Individual Records, Franchise Records and League records that have been broken during the 2015-16 NBA Regular season.

Individual Records

• Stephen Curry broke his record for most 3 point field goals made. He broke his previous tally of 286 from the 2014-15 season, nailing 402 3-point field goals, and is now the only person to score more than 300 and 400 3-point field goals in a single season.
• On 25 February 2016, Steph Curry made a 3-point field goal in his 128 consecutive game. This beat the previous record of Kyle Krover with a 3-point field goal for 127 consecutive games.  His streak  is at 152 and counting (will continue next season).

• Steph Curry became the 7 member of the 50-40-90 club, recording 50% field goal accuracy (50.4%), 40% 3-point field goal accuracy (45.6%) and 90% free throw accuracy (90.4%). He joins a club that consists of Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Larry Bird, Reggie Miller and Mark Price.
• Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are the first backcourt duo to score more than 600 3-point field goals in a single season. That’s more than 14 teams in the NBA this season.
• Tim Duncan became the 3 player to record 1,000 regular season wins, and is the only person to have recorded them with a single team. This was accomplished on April 5, 2016 in a win over the Utah Jazz.

  

• Draymond Green is the first player to have recorded 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals in a single season. He reached this milestone on 30 March 2016 in a game against Utah. He is also one of 10 players in NBA history, to have recorded a 5-by-5, that is scoring at least 5 in all statistical categories of Points, Rebounds, Assists, Blocks and Steals. He acomplished that on 5 December 2015 in a game against Boston.

• Kristaps Prozingis of the New York Knicks, is the only player to have scored 1,000 points, recorded 500 rebounds, 100 blocks and made at least 75 3-point field goals in their rookie season.
• DeMare Derozan of Toronto set an NBA Record of consecutive free throws made with 24, on a 3 March 2016 match against Portland. He would finish 24-25 from the Free throw line in a 117-115 win for the Toronto Raptors.
• Kobe Bryant, playing his final season in the NBA scored his 33,000 point on 7 January 2016 in a loss against Sacramento. He is the only player to score 33,000 points while playing for a single franchise in his entire career.

• Bryant set the NBA Record for the most points on his final career game. He scored 60 points in a 101-96 win against Utah. He also became the fifth player to attempt 10,000 free throws.
• On 11 April 2016, Russell Westbrook recorded his 18 Triple Double of the season in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers. He ties Magic Johnson for the most triple doubles in a season, since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. His triple double against the Lakers came in just 18 minutes, the second fastest in NBA history.

Franchise Records

• The Toronto Raptors recorded their first 50 win season as they sealed the second seed in the Eastern Conference. They recorded their 50 win on 30 March, 2016.

• The Golden State Warriors became only the second team to reach 70 wins in a regular season, joining the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.
• The Warriors, along with the Chicago Bulls are the only teams that have recorded back to back seasons with 65 wins. The Bulls did it during 1995-96 and 1996-97, and the Warriors have done this over 2014-15 and 2015-16.
• San Antonio Spurs recorded their best ever season by winning their 64 game on April 2 against Toronto. It beats the 2005-06 franchise record of 63 regular season wins. The Spurs also extend their season of winning 50+ regular season games to 19 seasons (if we count the winning percentage of the shortened 1998-99 season, where they won 37 out of 50).  They finish the season 67-15, tied as the 8 best record in NBA history.
• Philadelphia have recorded 3 consecutive seasons with 60 or more defeats a season. This has been going on since 2013-14. During that time, the 76ers have won 47 out of 242 games and have been in the draft lottery ever since.

• The 76ers are also the only franchise to start multiple seasons 0-17, as they matched their start to the 2014-15 season the same in 2015-16.
• The Los Angeles Lakers have recorded their worst season in Franchise history. They surpassed their tally of 61 losses with their 62 defeat at the hands of co-tenants LA Clippers, making it back to back seasons with 60+ losses for the 16 time NBA Champions.  The final tally was a 17-65 record for the Lakers.
