Marc Gasol made headlines during free agency. The 2019 NBA Champion signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as part of their veteran’s minimum. For Gasol, it is a return to the team that drafted him when he entered the NBA.

Marc’s brother Pau is a Los Angeles Lakers legend. Marc was part of a trade package that enabled Pau Gasol to join the Lakers. With the Lakers, Pau won 2 NBA Championships, forming a solid tandem with Kobe Bryant.

Marc Gasol will want to win an NBA Championship with the same franchise, solidifying the legacy of the two brothers in the NBA. But not everyone is happy about Gasol’s move to Tinsel Town.

Toronto Raptors and Spanish National Team assistant coach Sergio Scariolo spoke to MARCA radio in Spain about Gasol’s move.  Scariolo was not happy about the departures of Gasol and fellow big Serge Ibaka.

“As a coach, Marc Gasol’s move to the Lakers has made me bad, It has not been good news at all. I didn’t particularly like neither his departure nor Serge [Ibaka’s], but that is the law of life.”

Scariolo backs Marc Gasol to succeed

However, Scariolo wishes the best for Gasol and is glad that he has an opportunity to compete for an NBA Championship alongside LeBron James.

“It is very good that Marc has the option of winning a second title, and that a prestigious franchise like the Lakers and a player like LeBron [James], the NBA’s top player, has personally been interested in having him with him.”

The Raptors assistant coach says Gasol will thrive in Los Angeles because he is a great teammate. “I think he will fit in and will be very well received by his new team.

“With him, his teammates play with pleasure because he is generous, altruistic, defends, is a great passer, and when it is necessary he makes himself available. He is always prepared.”

Scariolo noted that Gasol and LeBron James play a very similar style, and have high basketball IQ. “Then, chemistry is achieved on the court.

“LeBron and Marc speak the same language, with high knowledge of basketball, an orientation to win games before personal statistics, and a willingness to think about the collective ahead [of themselves].”

Gasol and LeBron James will take the court together next season when the Los Angeles Lakers begin their title defense. The NBA season begins on December 22nd, 2020.
