Anthony Davis suffered a minor injury in the Lakers’ scrimmage against the Orlando Magic from a couple of nights ago. Davis was poked in the eye and had to be taken out of the game. He was dominating in the first quarter, almost putting up a double-double before being removed from the game. Everyone assumed it was for precautionary reasons, but he is yet to see the Orlando floor since.
AD missed the Lakers’ final scrimmage game against the Washington Wizards. This is along with AD sitting out of practice according to Tania Ganguli. She put a picture of AD sitting on the bench and wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes. Lakers’ coach Frank Vogel has added to the news. Vogel said that there is a slim chance that AD misses the opener against the LA Clippers.

Anthony Davis and injuries in the bubble

AD is always injured. His injury patterns are scary, and they threaten to come at a bad time. He spent a large majority of the season dealing with back and shoulder injuries. His entire career has been plagued by injuries, with many even questioning whether AD can evolve into an elite player with his injury history. This eye injury is minor and shouldn’t keep him out for any reasonable time, but it brings up a pattern.
The Lakers will be quite hurt with the absence of AD. Even though the team has gone 5-2 without him, he is crucial in the post-season. Without AD, a team can create their entire defensive plan around suffocating LeBron James. This is a strategy that has worked in the past and has a high chance of working now, as ‘Bron is 35 years old. Even though LeBron has carried the Lakers whenever AD isn’t on, it will be a mighty challenge for him to do it in the post-season.

AD not being available damages the team seriously. First, even though ‘Bron averaged 31.5 points without AD, it isn’t enough for the Lakers. The team is just as reliant on AD as they are on LeBron. Second, AD is not only their defensive leader with 2.5 blocks a game but also the leading scorer on the team. AD can finish those LeBron alley-oops better than anyone ever has.
Anthony Davis should make it through the bubble healthy, even though an eye-injury is delaying his start.
