The GOAT debate is one of the most heated arguments in the world of basketball. But of the thousands of players in NBA history, only a handful are in conversation about becoming the GOAT. Even among those great players, LeBron James and Michael Jordan are seemingly the top 2 candidates.
However, in a recent episode of the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Michael Eric Dyson made an interesting point.
“John Thompson [Allen Iverson’s George Town coach], who saved him, who took him on, we would have never seen one of the greatest players ever. And was it Kobe and other people said, ‘If Allen Iverson 6’6″, ain’t no conversation about who the greatest of all-time would have been, bro.

“Because the man’s heart was incredible, his will, his skill, his ability to score, unbelievable. All that because of the great John Thompson.”
AI spent 17 years in the league, and it was enough for him to create a Hall of Fame resume. However, there is just one jewel missing from his crown, which is an NBA championship. But it was not due to a lack of effort from Iverson’s side.
Maybe, if he had a better supporting cast, AI would have retired as an NBA Champion. This would have certainly boosted his case in the GOAT conversation.

After winning the 2020 NBA championship, LeBron’s finals record finally improved after four years. Moreover, this championship meant much more to him and the team as well. For the Lakers, this was their first NBA title in 10 years, that too in a year where the world lost Kobe.

On the other side, LeBron finally won an NBA title in the West, which was used against him. Moreover, the fourth title helped him in closing a little more gap between him and MJ for the GOAT title.
But if LeBron James wants to convince every fan that he is indeed the Greatest Player of All Time, he has to win a few championships more. What do you think? Will LeBron ever surpass Michael Jordan as the GOAT?
