Despite attaining NBA superstardom, LeBron James never forgot his humble roots. He constantly makes generous contributions to causes he believes in. A large part of these go towards his childhood town of Akron. He even returned to the state’s NBA side in his prime and won them their first NBA Championship. By doing so, he kept his promise of winning a sports title for the city starved of success for over 50 years.
A large focus of James’ charitable donations have been towards children. In a CNN interview with Don Lemon, he said, “We want every kid that walks through this school to be inspired, to come … away with something, something where they can give back.”
True to his goals, the former league MVP set up a school through his foundation in 2018. The ‘I PROMISE SCHOOL’ and aimed towards at-risk children. It promises free tuition, free food, free transportation within 2 miles.

LeBron James ‘I PROMISE’ school set to feature in a documentary
The school was made to change graduation rates as it was felt that the only possible way to achieve this was to have their own school.
The school will complete 2 years at the end of this academic year. However, the documentary features its first year. Titled ‘I Promise’, the feature provides fans with a glimpse of the NBA star’s endeavor to narrow the gap in achievement amongst kids in his hometown.
James’ SpringHill Entertainment says, “the glimpse is given through the eyes of inspiring students who are resetting expectations of their futures.“
He says the goal of the school is to give a platform to kids from the inner-city and the projects. WKYC reported James’ comments on another goal of the school, “It is to have kids like these feel like superheroes.“
The 35-year-old says it is surreal to open a school near the very street he grew up on. In the trailer, he shares a line about that time he used to walk down the street and look at McDonald’s and not be able to afford it.

LeBron James donated $2.5 million from his ‘The Decision’ special to the Boys and Girls Club of America. His foundation set up the After School All-Stars in Akron. Besides this, they also set up a ‘wheels for education’ initiative. The program raised money to fund education and help children have a place to go to after their daily studies.
