Patrick Williams went fourth overall to the Chicago Bulls in the 2020 NBA Draft. Williams will be teaming up with 2019 draft pick Coby White, but it turns out they share some history already.
Williams’ high school coach Jacoby Davis was talking about Williams and revealed a story of the two facing each other in an AAU basketball game.
“Pat was a sophomore. Coby was a junior. Pat had a great game. There were 3 seconds left in the game. We were up. We had a chance to seal the game and someone was at the line, missed some free throws, we were only up two and said, ‘Don’t let Coby get the ball.’

“Of course, Coby got the ball. He goes up court and Pat closes out. He tried not to foul him so he jumps out to block the shot.”
Davis also revealed who won that game. “Of course Coby throws up the shot and I think it was off backboard from half court to win the game. So it’s crazy that they’re up there on the same team.”

Williams and White may have faced each other all those years ago, but they have to work together now. Williams has gone farther up the board than anyone expected, so there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on him.
However, he doesn’t need to succumb to that. He will have a crucial defensive role on this Bulls squad, and he needs to execute that while developing his scoring game.
Coby White was torching the league the last time we saw him play, and the hope is he has only gotten better. Forming the back-court with Zach LaVine, White has a green light on shooting the ball. White and Zach produce most of the offense for this Bulls squad.

White has a developing playmaking game, of which Williams may often be a beneficiary. Spot-up corner threes may be the start for Williams to establish himself as a competent and valuable three-and-D commodity in this league. That’s just for now, as Williams may just have a higher ceiling than that.
