History repeated itself when the news of Serge Ibaka leaving the Toronto Raptors to join the Clippers surfaced. Something similar happened last year too when free agent Kawhi Leonard moved to the LA-based franchise on a 4-year max deal. In light of his departure, Serge penned an emotional message for his Raptors fans.

Air Congo took to Instagram to thank his fans and the entire Raptors organization. He wrote, “It is really a great organization that takes care of its players and I’m thankful that I became an NBA Champion with them. I’ve had great teammates, front office and staff next to me. And of course, a fan base that is second to none. So thank you Toronto.”

The 31-year-old veteran joined the Raptors in 2016-17 mid-season. The Orlando Magic received Terrence Ross and a future 1st-round pick for Serge in February 2017. This remained a great signing for the Raptors because the star went on to score his career-high scores with them.
Why did Serge take this decision even though he loves Canada?
This move couldn’t have been just about the 2-year $19 million contract (with PO in 2nd season). Ibaka had his options open from the Raptors, the Nets, and the Clippers. Arguably, the Raptors could have paid Ibaka enough to keep him for one more year. But the star center also knew that his chances of winning a championship were greater with the Clippers. Moreso, his kinship with Kawhi Leonard could’ve further eased his decision.

There were also rumors that the Clippers were interested in the services of Marc Gasol. Had this trade taken place, the Clippers’ team would’ve looked like a replica of the 2019 NBA Championship winners. But Marc finally went to the Lakers, and that rumor died then and there.
The Raptors were successful in anchoring Fred VanVleet with a lucrative 4-year $85 million deal. For them, the salary space will allow a more efficient 2021 off-season where they can further fill for the losses.
