The Toronto Raptors saw their championship defense end in heartbreak. After fighting back in a series against the Boston Celtics, the Raptors fell in game seven. They became the first defending champion to be knocked out prior to the Conference Finals since the 2014 San Antonio Spurs. However, this season had more positives than negatives.

One of the biggest positives was how rookie head coach Nick Nurse transitioned into his second season after winning the title. Despite the departure of Kawhi Leonard, the team was one of the best in the league this season. For his efforts, Nurse has signed a multi-year extension with the Toronto Raptors, per Shams Charania.

Are the Toronto Raptors making the right decision?

The Raptors dod the best thing they could have. While they did fire Dwane Casey on the backs of a Coach of the Year victory, they have done the right thing by extending Nurse. He won the team their first title in franchise history as a rookie coach. While a lot of luck fell his way, he coached that team into a machine.

His coaching is why the team operated without missing a step after losing two key rotation players in Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Nurse facilitated the growth of Norman Powell, OG Anunoby, and others to make them the team they are. Even though Pascal Siakam shrank in the Playoffs, he showed through the season why he may be one of the best forwards in the league.

Nurse’s extension was the right move, but Raptors have a big off-season ahead of them. They can possibly lose three major stars, namely Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, and Fred VanVleet. Masai Ujiri did the right thing by extending Nurse, but let’s see if he can fill this roster out to give him a chance for more success.
