The owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, is a walking American Dream. He is the author of a bestselling book, and owns established businesses, a popular TV show, and a great team in the Mavs. But he committed this one ‘mistake’ that must to this day not leave his back. The name of that ‘404 error’ was Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He had a real opportunity to draft Giannis in the year 2013, which he let go. The Greek Freak was drafted as an overall 15th pick that year. The Mavs had the right to the 13th pick that season and they could’ve locked in the potential superstar. Instead, they traded the pick for future second rounds picks.

The Milwaukee Bucks star is eligible for a Supermax extension this year. In all the capacity, the Bucks will surely offer it to their greatest player on the roster. However, one can not yet decipher whether Giannis would accept it. In case he doesn’t, he will become a free agent in 2021.

As per a popular sportswriter and an NBA insider, the Mavs are “at head of line” in pursuing the services of the two-time NBA MVP. Teams like the Miami Heat are also rushing to dig into the gold, but the Mavs are leading the pack of hunters.

He also revealed in the interview, “They [The Mavs] want to keep their books clear for 2021. I wouldn’t expect them to add any major free agents this year. They’re going to wait.” This signals towards the fact that Mark Cuban’s franchise will try to make an offer that Giannis would not like to refuse, given that he becomes a free agent.

Why is this signing so very important to the Mavs?

The Dallas Mavericks failed to sign Giannis in 2013 because Mr. Cuban wanted to sign a player that can lift them up and give them a flying start from year one. Surprisingly, his calculations went wrong this time.

Nevertheless, the Mavs remained quite consistent in reaching the playoffs (leaving aside 2017, ‘18, ‘19) and finished #7 in 2020. In the playoffs too, they gave nightmares to the Clippers by leveling the series 2-2. Luka Doncic had been their hottest shining star, but the concerning asset remained Kristaps Porzingis, whose injury made them appear weak.

If they are to lure Giannis, they would have to give him more than just the million dollar bucks. The Greek Freak would want to join a team that can get him the coveted NBA ring, and for that to happen, Kristaps need to be the third most strong guy on the roster.
