Following the 2020 NBA Draft, Zion Williamson, the unanimous #1 overall pick, was predicted to win Rookie of the Year. But #2 overall pick, Ja Morant, seized the stage and won the award after an amazing season for the Grizzlies.
Throughout the season, Morant was a walking highlight reel. He had many electric posters throughout the season. Recently, three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade shared one of these highlights of Morant, and called him “Different!”
The highlight was Morant’s dunk on Suns’ Aron Baynes. It was one of the best dunks from the 2019-20 season. The 6’3 guard displayed unmatched athletics to dunk all over the 6’10 center. He had 13 points and six assists in that game, as the Grizzlies triumphed over the Suns in a seven-point victory.

Ja Morant: One for the future
Morant has established himself as an explosive player. His ability to get to the rim is impressive and is often compared to that of a young Russell Westbrook. He can dance past defenders and finish through traffic easily, even in clutch situations, like the game-winning layup against the Hornets in November 2019.
Along with Morant’s explosiveness, he has also shown the ability to create. As the starting point guard for the Grizzlies, he averaged 7.3 assists per game. He has a natural eye for a pass which is something that cannot be taught. The Grizzlies youngster excels at attracting the defenders and then picking out the open man for an easy bucket.
Bounce passes, alley-oops, flashy passes, Morant has everything in his arsenal. But sometimes he tries too hard, resulting in unforced turnovers. Because of this, he ended up ninth in the league in total turnovers.

Morant’s poor three-point shot is one of his few negatives. Attempting 2.7 threes per game, he averaged an under-impressive 33% in his rookie season. But with experience, there is no doubt that Morant will add that to this skill set too.
Despite just being 21, Morant has displayed leadership skills for the Grizzlies. He is going to be their point guard for the future, and it will be exciting to see how the Grizzlies build around him, and if he can lead the team to glory.
