The Houston Rockets have had two playoff runs foiled by the Golden State Warriors. To avoid the third, they traded for 2017 MVP, Russell Westbrook to pair alongside 2018 MVP James Harden. The NBA might be hosting scrimmages now but for Harden its a preparation for the playoffs.
After playing 25 minutes in the first game, Harden played 35 minutes in tonight’s scrimmage against the Memphis Grizzlies. In the post-game interview, he was asked if this just to secure the win, or to get a heavy workload. Harden confirmed it was for both, a good workout and ensuring the win.
“I got played for (25) minutes or so (against Raptors),” said Harden. “Honestly regular season and playoffs it’s going to be much harder. So I want to build that right now and keep that going. So next week when it starts I’m already prepared. I just want to push myself a little more and get a win.”

Can James Harden end the 25-year title drought in Houston?
With 16 free throws, and a scuffle with the referees, it was a James Harden classic. The Beard dropped 31 points, 8 erbounds and 9 assists as the Rockets beat the Grizzlies in their second scrimmage.

During the press conference, Harden admitted that playing so many minutes did tire him out, but it was important. “I got a little winded throughout the course of the game and I think everybody was. I just don’t want to play 20 minutes and in reality, when the 8 games come, we’ll be playing 35-36 minutes then it’s going to be a huge shock.”
He said he wanted to avoid any injury risk so he wanted to get his body acclimatized to playoff minutes already. “I wanna prepare myself so when next week comes I’m ready. It’s not a big shock for my legs and my body.”
What’s next for the Rockets?
In the 73 playoff games he has played for the Rockets, he is averaging 38 minutes per game. So when we head into the playoffs in the bubble, it will be no different. The Rockets’ offense relies on Harden majorly and coach Mike D’Antoni will be hoping his superstar isn’t drained out before the playoffs begin.
Their next scrimmage is now on the 28th of July, as they take on the Boston Celtics in their last game before the seeding matches commence. Their first official game will be against the Dallas Mavericks on the 31st of July, as they battle to make their way up the Western Conference ladder.
