The most awaited episode of the Brotherhood podcast went on air recently. The 12th episode featured Mike Krzyzewski’s successor and current head coach of Duke University, John Scheyer. Talking about John’s experience in the past year, the host Ryan Young asked him whether his outside-the-box thinking and creative staff decisions were something he wanted to pursue or if that was just something organic. To this, John replied, “It’s organic. If you go through the history of our program, Coach K’s beginning of his time, we’ve had coaches outside the Brotherhood.”
Mike Krzyzewski is known to sync foreign players and coaches under him. In the last 20 years, Coach K brought together individuals with unique perspectives and expertise. As a result, he created a team with great chemistry that understands what it means to play for Duke. Clearly, that was the key for him.
He added, “The thing that I learned very quickly as I get into being the head coach, it’s always who before what. You need to have the right people whether they’re in the Brotherhood or not. People that have been here they’ve had to elevate. For me, the chemistry, the ability to make each other better. Our staff is truly a team.”

The Blue Devils under John Scheyer
On June 2, 2021, Mike Krzyzewski announced his retirement as the head coach of Duke University by the end of the 2021-22 season. Following this, John Scheyer succeeded him officially in April 2022. In the past year, since he’s been the head coach, John has led the Blue Devils to be the champions of the 2023 ACC tournament. Unfortunately, they suffered a second-round exit from the NCAA tournament this year after their 65-52 loss to Tennessee.
Coach K left a lasting legacy with his team. They have a magical chemistry and understanding that has borne them success all these years. However, just like any other thing, people have to move to the next chapters of their lives. As John Scheyer takes Coach K’s place in the staff, we can only wish that the team stays put like before and achieves great success.
