It’s the day we’ve been anticipating. Our favorite game-changers from college basketball are finally entering the WNBA. Los Angeles Sparks has already picked up some amazing talent. That means one of the team’s most inspiring owners, Magic Johnson, is on the WNBA draft scene to roll out the red carpet. Stanford’s Cameron Brink was the second overall pick, selected by Sparks. They followed it with Tennessee’s Rickea Jackon, the fourth overall selection.
Jemele Hill was present when Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who’s part of the Sparks’ ownership, welcomed the new talent into the organization. “@MagicJohnson with a great welcome for the @LASparks two 1st round additions Cameron Brink + Rickea Jackson. #WNBADraft,” she wrote with a video of the 5x champion hosting a virtual draft party in Downtown Los Angeles with the actual draft playing on a large screen behind him.
After thanking the veterans on the team, including the ones present, Zia Cooke, Lexie Brown, Aari McDonald, and Rae Burrell!, Johnson expressed his excitement for the new season with the new arrivals. “They will add some things to the team that we don’t have already.”

He also repeated the sentiment on Instagram writing, “I’m truly excited with our picks of Cameron Brink at #2 and Rickea Jackson at #4! I want to shout out Sparks GM Raegan Pebley, our Head Coach Curt Miller, and the entire Sparks staff on the great steps we made today towards a new future for the Sparks! Let’s see who we get with our last pick at #28!” The 28th overall pick that went to the Sparks is McKenzie Forbes of the USC Trojans.

The new players are yet to meet Magic Johnson, from our understanding. However, he’s been nothing but praise about them.
Magic Johnson & Co. are prepared for the new season
As soon as she was selected, Johnson was hyped to have an “outstanding defender” in Brink. She’s the reigning Naismith Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year but also lethal from the 3-point line. He’s most excited to see her “high basketball IQ” to aid the team. He’s also very comfortable knowing that Jackson can score from anywhere in the paint.

This is not too far off from his observations about the new players in recent months. Johnson has been watching the college scene closely and hops on X to heap praise on all players, including the newly minted-Sparks.
The players at Johnson’s party were ecstatic about their new teammates. Most are glad that the team didn’t get carried away by the chatter and picked up a good defender in Brink just as they needed her. They’re now ready to help the new players transition to professional basketball. Do you think Magic’s team has chosen wisely?
