Angel Reese: From 'lazy' high schooler to WNBA star—what's your take on her journey?

Angel Reese has been the it girl for three years now. And her popularity is only soaring. While we may know her as the Chi-Town Barbie who is a menace in the paint and glass and fashionista outside the lines, there are things not everyone knows about. But another Baltimore native recently shed light and shared the proud feeling of her impact on the WNBA. Sam Cassell also joked about why the 22-year-old was “lazy” while she was growing up, despite those dominating stats in high school.

That’s awesome. That’s my little, that’s my baby girl right there.” The 3x NBA Champion said to Mark Jackson and ‘Bluu’. “Angel, like just watching her grow up through the ranks in Baltimore High School and see her now and play the game of basketball, I thought she was so lazy in high school because she was so much better than everyone.

Sam Cassell continued on the Mark Jackson Show episode 82. “You know sometimes she missed the layup, get the rebound, miss another layup, another team get the ball and she wouldn’t run back down court. So seeing her playing in the WNBA right now, you know it’s just been joy to me.” That’s why the current assistant coach with the Celtics also shouted out to Angel Reese’s parents.

Being from Baltimore, the success of the former LSU graduate feels personal for Sam Cassell. “Like seeing her play, it’s like wow we got another one from our town that’s doing something positive and making it.” Earlier this year, they even met during the summer games, when Angel Reese was out possibly third-wheeling.

She attended an NBA Summer League fixture between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics with former Chicago Sky teammate Kysre Gondrezick and Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown. It was also the game where Brown’s comment about Bronny James went viral. That time she met the former NBA point guard and current Celtics assistant coach Sam Cassell. The 54-year-old has been working as an assistant coach in the league since 2009.

Sam Cassell is awaiting his next move

In fact, the same month he retired from his playing career, the Wizards came calling for his services in a new role. After 5 years, Sam Cassell would join Doc Rivers’s staff in the Clippers in 2020 and with the 76ers until 2023. Later, the Celtics hired the 3x NBA Champion and earned his first championship as a coach last season. This year, one of the most eye-catching votes received was for Sam Cassell.

Have an interesting take?

The NBA GM Survey of the upcoming season revealed that Cassell was voted joint first for the best assistant in the NBA. Earlier this summer, even the Lakers had a meeting with him, but ultimately chose to go with the front-runner for the job JJ Redick. Some feel that the former point guard is often overlooked when it comes to the main coaching position.

That’s why on the same ‘Mark Jackson Show’, Sam Cassell explained his thought process. “I just got to find a general manager or a president of a team that believes in me, believes that I can get this done.” He even admitted it’s not just always about the Xs and Os, but is unsure about the missing call. With 17% of the GMs believing in his ability, the offer might come sooner rather than later.
