The Sparks never fail to spark joy in the team boss. After their 88-82 win over Indiana Fever, even with rookie Caitlin Clark having a career night, Magic Johnson was feeling extra chuffed. That showed in the customary Earvin “Magic” Johnson X post congratulating his team. Special shoutouts went to the leading scorers of the team. In this same game, the top WNBA draft pick, Clark was racking up individual accolades. But it wasn’t enough to tide Indiana over Magic’s team.
“Proud of my @LASparks for getting a win over the Fever tonight! Kia Nurse led the team in scoring with 22 points and Aari McDonald came up big with 21 points off the bench! Dearica Hamby had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds,” he wrote pm X.
Less than a month into her career, Clark has recorded a season-best 30 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds in this game. The other top draft pick on the Sparks end, Cameron Brink made 3 points and rebounds each and two assists.

This is the second time in four days that the Indiana Fever had to contend with the Sparks. Clark’s debut has been rife with individual records but home losses as they played against the top 3 teams in the league. The Sparks stand 2-4, a stark contrast to Indiana’s 1-7 record. There were also moments when Clark made some rookie mistakes but the experienced Sparks players gave it a pass. For Magic Johnson, his team keeps giving him reasons to be proud.
Magic Johnson keeps the Sparks alive
Johnson had a positive outlook on the upcoming WNBA season after the team picked up Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson. Ever since the Los Angeles Lakers icon led the ownership group to keep the Sparks in LA in 2014, he’s been an involved owner. Last week, he was celebrating rookie, Brink’s WNBA debut along with the team’s season-opener.

In that game, the Sparks beat the Washington Mystics 70-68, a great start to a promising season. Brink scored 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists along with making two game-winning blocks in the final seconds. Magic hailed her as the team’s clutch star for her incredible aid to the team’s experienced stars.
They proceeded to play their next game against Clark on May 24. The Sparks lost 73-78 while Clark made 11 points in that game. It was one of Brink’s better-scoring nights with 15 points. But it’s established now that individual high scores aren’t enough to win the game. And owner Magic Johnson looks forward to team success over the individual records.
