While one would expect the usual debates to play out over the summer, a new one has taken precedence this year. Due to the World Athletics Championship and the FIBA World Cup, summer has been a busy time for sports fans. But, it has also given way to an interesting conversation. Whether or not the NBA champions deserve the title of World Champions. The issue came into focus due to the comments of track & field prodigy Noah Lyles. But, it’s quickly become a major talking point with stars like Kevin Durant also chiming in. However, the latest to add their name to the conversation is one Shaquille O’Neal.

As a result, the debate continues and now, the 2021 NBA Champion has thrown his hat in the ring.

Joining in the conversation was NBA Champion, 2-time MVP, and Greek-Nigerian export, Giannis Antetokounmpo. While he clearly took the side of the 2023 Gold Medalist, his comments got some legendary backing. Giannis said, “I might get some backlash for this, but I really do not care. I totally agree with him [Noah Lyles].” Further, he continued, “He received so much backlash for saying the obvious…I don’t think in any other sport you are called the world champions. You know, like in soccer, which is way bigger than the NBA.”

Taking to his IG, Shaq also shared the Greek Freak‘s opinions. With Noah’s comments gaining traction, let’s go back to the moment that started it all.

Prior to the USA’s humiliating end to the World Cup, Noah Lyles made the claim: NBA Champions shouldn’t be called World Champions. Even though his statement made sense from a logical standpoint, it received a ton of backlash, most notably from among NBA circles.

While he did have some people backing him, the common perception stood against Lyles. However, the subsequent embarrassment for Team USA and the triumph of Germany has further proved Noah’s original point. As a result, the Slim Reaper, Kevin Durant, had to chime in too.

While misplaced, the entire NBA world took unkindly to Noah’s words. Going after the 26-year-old, stars like Devin Booker and Durant came down on him hard. “Somebody help this brother,” is what KD had to respond with.

But, since the initial backlash, there has been a sobering effect around the country as they take in what Lyles truly means. In fact, notable NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith even had to apologize for his comments on Noah.

With more people, players and legends alike, coming down on Noah’s side, it remains to be seen where the eventual verdict lies. But, it’s safe to say, it has begun a conversation and given the relatively dull months of summer sports some spice.
