NBA legend Magic Johnson has been making headlines for quite some time now. Even before embarking on his fun trip to the Italian Peninsula, the former point guard was in the news for getting involved in the workings and functioning of a major NFL Franchise. More details about the same are recently coming to light as the franchise is looking to make a change. This comes after a scandal involving its previous owner that affected his reputation and bank balance.

However, the scandal might’ve cleared things up for the former Los Angeles Laker to swoop in.

Magic Johnson, along with a group led by Philadelphia 76ers’ managing partner Josh Harris, recently acquired an ownership stake in the Washington Commanders. In May, the owners, Daniel and Tanya Snyder, decided to bid adieu to the team after 24 years and put the franchise up for sale

The sale was confirmed in exchange for $6.05 billion- the highest price paid for a North American sports franchise. The investors reached an agreement a few months ago, but the NFL franchise owners approved it only a few hours ago.

‘Bleacher Report’ recently took to Twitter to report the news, first broken by ESPN writer Don Van Natta Jr. It stated that there’s a “pretty good chance” of the Washington Commanders changing their name and rebranding the team in a different manner. This decision was speculated due to the ownership changing hands.

This would not be the first time that the team’s name would undergo a change. Fans knew the team as the ‘Washington Redskins’ for almost 82 years. But in 2022 the franchise rebranded itself as the ‘Washington Commanders’.

Daniel Snyder’s scandal exposed

Renaming the team could be a way to distance it from the previous owner. The NFL placed its largest penalty ever on an NFL Team owner. The league fined Daniel Snyder $60 billion for misconduct and wrongdoings.

It all started when the NFL conducted an independent investigation, supervised by the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton. A 23-page report was released when the sale went through yesterday.

It noted that Snyder physically harassed a team employee, Tiffani Johnston, almost 17-18 years ago.

Furthermore, the report also found that a few of Snyder’s team executives intentionally withheld $11 million in revenue. According to the NFL’s agreement, Washington was expected to share that revenue with the other teams. The report did not state whether Snyder was the one who orchestrated the financial wrongdoing. It did state, however, that “he was aware of certain efforts” to minimize the sharing of revenue.
