The start of the 2023-24 NFL season also marked the official start of Magic Johnson’s tenure as a newly minted Football team co-owner. Many NBA personalities are now also rooting for the Los Angeles Lakers legend’s team, including his former rival and Dream Team teammate, Charles Barkley. Sir Charles savored the Washington Commanders game in his own style. As he’s prone to, the notorious gambler paid the price despite Magic’s team winning.
Barkley shared how he started the new NFL season by barging in on the radio show Roc and Manuch with Jimmy B. Though it didn’t go so well, he was pretty lighthearted about it.

A new era started for the Washington Commanders on Sunday. This was the first official game for the franchise since the Josh Harris-led group, which included Magic, bought them in July. The Commanders were up against the Arizona Cardinals at the FedEx Field. Washington had a good performance which led them to a 20-16 victory. It was a great moment for Johnson. Not so much for his friend, Barkley, though.
The Chuckster dropped by the iHeartRadio show, Roc and Manuch with Jimmy B the next day after the Commanders – Cardinals game. He revealed to the hosts that he was left hurting after the game. Chuck often spends the NFL season betting money on games and teams.
The hosts asked if he bet on the Cardinals. Charles Barkley coolly said, “I lost… I had the Commanders.” One might’ve expected Charles to bet on Arizona, given his stint with the Phoenix Suns. But he didn’t, and it came with a price. Even though Washington won the game, Barkley lost the bet, possibly due to overestimating their skills.

“The Cardinals played well,” he said. “They did surprise me or the Commanders stink, A or B.” Magic Johnson would have something to say about that commentary.
Barkley was pretty cool about the loss. It’s probably because of his experience betting on the wrong team during NFL games.

NFL teams have cost The Chuckster a lot
From Tom Brady to Patrick Mahomes, he’s blamed many for winning games and making him lose money. He still holds a grudge against Brady for making him lose $100,000 in Super Bowl LI.
He hasn’t made his thoughts about the Commanders’ odds known for this season. So far, Washington is making a strong impression with their offensive line.
