I’m a guy who wants more, I’ve always wanted more. I have 14 world championship rings and I [want] a Super Bowl ring. And so how can I help them achieve that?” After successfully becoming a minority owner in the NFL, Earvin Magic Johnson had plans for the Super Bowl victory. And it seems, just a year after the statement, his Washington Commanders are going to fulfill that prophecy after their latest win propelled them into the playoff contention.

It’s official, my Washington Commanders are in the Playoffs 🎉 Congratulations to the @Commanders players, Head Coach Dan Quinn, GM Adam Peters for putting this team together, my fellow owners, and the incredible Commanders fan base!” the Lakers legend penned. Just a few hours before the game, he was manifesting for the win.

Tonight my Washington Commanders have an opportunity to solidify their spot in the Playoffs by defeating a good Falcons team on Sunday Night Football!” he had expressed. And well, the victory did come, but it wasn’t straight. The game kept the fans on the edge of their seat, proceeding into overtime. The Commanders defeated the Atlanta Falcons 30-24 and improved their record (11-5) to clinch a spot in the NFC playoffs — a first since 2020.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels rushed for a career-high 127 yards to spearhead the win. Involved owner as he is, Johnson also took a moment to extend the congratulations to him. “I want to also congratulate Jayden Daniels for setting the record for most rushing yards by a rookie QB! 👏🏾.”

His play found tight end Zach Ertz for a two-yard touchdown with 2:45, which confirmed the fourth straight win. “this playoff run has been a total team effort,” the 5x champion noted, naming every player on the team. With that, the NBA icon finds another opportunity to add a second ring in a matter of months.

Magic Johnson is on course for 16th title

A few months ago, the 65-year-old acquired another team in Washington, and stated, “We want to win championships. I got 14, we need 15.” At the time, 3x NBA Finals MVP became part of the ownership group for the Washington Spirits. Recently, they reached the NWSL final but lost at the final hurdle. However, his 15th ring was already complete thanks to his “beloved” team.

With the LA Dodgers’ victory against the New York Yankees in the World Series, Magic extended the number of rings to 15. His trophies collection started with the Lakers, where he won 5. He was part of the ownership group from 1994 until 2010. But his other Los Angeles team continued to pay dividends. LA Sparks won the WNBA title in 2016, and the Dodgers won the World Series in 2020, and now in 2024.

Plus, Magic Johnson’s MLS team, LAFC won the MLS Cup in 2022. So, only his Washington sides are left to bring him the silverware. With the Commanders securing their spots, the Lakers legend would be hopeful it ends better, unlike the Spirits’ results.
