Is Dak Prescott's $240 million deal a career killer compared to Brady and Mahomes' team-friendly contracts?

Big news for Cowboys fans this week. Dak Prescott signed a $240 million contract to keep the team’s Super Bowl chances alive. Charles Barkley is not impressed. He points out an ominous pattern instead. As per Chuck, the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL have never given their money’s worth in the form of Super Bowl rings. The ones who did, his unwavering faves Tom Brady and Dak Prescott, weren’t the top-earners of the league. That, Chuck, hands-down believes is the smarter choice.

Because he very bluntly said on The Roc and Manuch Show, “I think all these guys are stupid to be honest with you,” regarding Prescott, the Cowboys, and the middlemen. The hosts of the show agree with his reasoning. Prescott was previously on a $160 million contract. The expectation of that $240 million contract is that he has to go down in Cowboys history by winning the Super Bowl. He has a great statistical record but he is yet to make it past the playoffs.

With the contract, Barkley doesn’t think he ever will. He has the data to prove his theory. “Look at the two guys Tom Brady and Pat Mahomes. Neither one of those guys have ever been really the highest paid player because they always take less money. So they can actually pay other players. ”

That’s true. Tom Brady earned $235.2 million in 20 years with the New England Patriots. While Mahomes’ $503 million contract for 10 years is the highest in NFL history, his salary was nowhere near in the current highest paid shotcallers. But Barkley states that Brady and Mahomes took a paycut to have a better team that wins.

I’m sitting here watching for the last x amount of years every quarterback who became the highest paid player never won another championship ‘cuz they can’t afford to pay other people and I’m looking at Tom who was never the highest paid but they were able to pay other player.”

The hosts agreed with him citing that Brady ensured he had Wes Walker and Rob Gronkowski to lead the team to the Super Bowl multiple times. A lot of people would agree with Chuck when he says, “I wish some of these guys would follow the blueprint of Tom and Pat.” But he’s not blaming the players nor the teams.

Is Charles Barkley’s personal bias showing?

One could argue that Barkley is biased. The Cowboys have never ranked high in Chuck’s favorites as much as his TNT colleague, Shaquille O’Neal is a fan. The 76ers legend is loyal to the Eagles and called Brady his ‘man-crush’ he plays golf with.

But every time Chuck bet on the Eagles, the Patriots and Chiefs have upset him. He’s blamed Brady and Mahomes several times for making him lose several hundred thousands in bets. However, Barkley has also admitted that both have a sound team backing them because of their smart financial decisions.

He outrightly calls the agents behind the biggest NFL contracts, “scumbags.” As per Chuck, the agents don’t care about the player, team and fans. They just want their client to get the biggest deal for a big cut.

You could also say that Barkley was never one of the top NBA earners either and he’s not won a title. Yet the pattern in the NFL he pointed out is undeniable.
