Joe Dumars was a key member of the Detroit Pistons during the era of their infamous Bad Boys. He reflected on the intense rivalry they shared with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Initially, they defended Jordan with basic man-to-man defense, but they soon realized the need for a special strategy, known as the ‘Jordan Rules’, to contain the basketball phenomenon.

?Early on we weren’t using the so-called Jordan Rules. We were just playing basic man defense on him and helping when we can and all and it was those big games that ultimately we realized we can’t try to defend him like a normal NBA two guard. We have to come up with something different and special just for this guy because he’s different and special.?

?Physical, nasty, intense, and it wasn’t a place for the weak. If you were weak, you could not have gotten through that,? said Joe Dumars, according to the book There Is No Next by Sam Smith.

The Pistons and Bulls characterized their battles with physicality, nastiness and intensity, leaving no room for the weak. While watching the documentary Bad Boys, Dumars remembered the brutal games that showcased the rough and tough nature of the era.
