Does Shaq's legacy at LSU overshadow current athletes, or does it inspire them to greatness?

Shaquille O’Neal’s towering legacy at Louisiana State University extends far beyond the basketball court, casting a long shadow that continues to influence the institution decades after his departure. The NBA legend’s connection to his alma mater runs deep, from his record-breaking collegiate career to his ongoing philanthropic efforts. Now, in an unexpected twist, Shaq’s son Myles O’Neal has thrust LSU back into the spotlight with a playful jab.

A recent Instagram story posted by Myles showed the father-son duo at the Tiger Stadium during the matchup between the LSU Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels. While the Rebels were bested by the Tigers (29-26), another play caught the eyes of the fans. In one of the videos, the O’Neal family friend Logan Bohbot could be seen giving directions to the LSU athletes on how to play by making hand gestures. The 27-year-old sarcastically quoted this on his story as, “Give this man a job @loganbohbot.

The seven-footer was a student at LSU from 1989 to 1992. Then, the Big Diesel dominated the court, earning 2x All-American honors and the Adolph Rupp Trophy as NCAA men’s basketball player of the year. Additionally, the effect didn’t end with his NBA draft. O’Neal vowed his mother that he would finish his bachelor’s degree at the university, returning in 2000. His dedication to education was undeniable, and how relevant that was for student-athletes nationwide is hard not to mention.

To honor the contributions made by Shaq to the athletic facility of LSU, the management in 2011 erected a larger-than-life statue of O’Neal on the North end of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The bronze statue weighed a total of 900 lbs and it took the efforts of O’Neal and his mother Lucille to unveil the cloth from the statue. “I don’t think there is anything comparable because Coach Johnson set me up. They sent me little sculptures of what it would look like so I thought it was one of those little things. When that curtain came down it was like wow. They really did a good job. I’m honored and humbled. There are a lot of great players that came through this university – greater than me,” said O’Neal after the unveiling of his statue.

As LSU navigates the latest social media buzz created by Myles, the incident serves as a reminder of the evolving landscape of college sports in the digital age. The power of social media to turn casual remarks into newsworthy events underscores the need for universities to manage their public image carefully. Even though it can’t be said that BohBot will be hired by LSU it seems the university had a plan for the seven-footer.

LSU offered a DJ role to Shaquille O’Neal

For many days, the Baton Rouge program was gearing up for a grand homecoming celebration that promised to be a memorable event for students, alumni, and the community. The celebration included a parade that started at 5:30 pm on October 11 along West Lakeshore Drive. This was followed by a homecoming concert featuring DJ Diesel aka Shaquille O’Neal.

Have an interesting take?

This isn’t the only time that Shaq was present during any LSU event. During his uni days in the 80s, the seven-footer had formed a passion for DJing. It was not until four years after his retirement that Shaq officially got into the music scene as an EDM artist by the name of ‘Big Diesel’. It’s his friend Bohbot from ‘Medium Rare’ who has helped him to connect with different music festivals to play at.

The Lakers icon was previously seen showing his DJ skills at LSU during an event in 2019. This year’s homecoming event started at 8 pm on October 11 which was followed by a match between the LSU Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels on October 12 in which Shaq and his son were spotted together. With various videos posted online showing Shaq in his ultimate form, it can be speculated that LSU’s choice to bring ‘DJ Diesel’ back was a worthy one.
