Gilbert Arenas was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2001. However, the team could not keep him for long because of salary issues. But the Warriors found a way to keep another player from the same draft, and that was Jason Richardson. Although the two of them did not do much with the Warriors, they both went on to have stellar NBA careers. Both of them became incredible scorers in the league, but in their rookie season, they played together in a match, and that is when they realized that the NBA was way different than they had imagined.

In a recent episode of the Knuckleheads podcast, the special guest was Jason Richardson. During his conversation with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, he revealed it was them who made Richardson understand the real NBA.

The Clippers went all-in against Richardson and Arenas

As the staple of the show, the first question from Darius Miles was to know who gave Richardson his welcome to the NBA moment, or, as Miles put it, “Who bust yo a**?”

This led to Richardson revealing that it was actually both of the hosts, Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, who absolutely destroyed his team in his rookie year.

Back in 2001, the Golden State Warriors got both Gilbert Arenas and Jason Richardson from the draft. As they were slowly experiencing and feeling out the NBA, they were hoping to show their talent in the summer league games.

But little did they know that the Los Angeles Clippers would be bringing out almost the entirety of their starting roster for the summer league game. Jason Richardson said, “Ya’ll man, ya’ll whooped our a** man. Damn, I said I have to go back to the drawing board after that.

Miles said that the coaches at the time gave them permission to shoot as many shots as they wanted. So they kept shooting and increasing the score. The Clippers won by over 20 points.

Gilbert Arenas was a major influence on Richardson

Some of the most iconic moments that have etched Richardson’s place in NBA history are his slam-dunk contests. But during the interview, Richardson revealed that the one who gave him most of his ideas was Gilbert Arenas.

He said that Arenas always had crazy ideas, and he told Richardson to do them in the dunk contest. Although he could not make all of them come true, he did do a couple of them and won back-to-back dunk contests.
