Isiah Thomas is right—are young NBA players too reckless and disrespectful these days?

Even though Isiah Thomas has plans for his own documentary, the Detroit Pistons legend is not saving everything for it, as he once again has words for Gilbert Arenas. Zeke is not afraid to speak his mind and knows the cons of wrongful media portrayal thanks to Michael Jordan‘s documentary. Speaking about gameplay, he differentiated what a good player should do, and did not focus on what Arenas was talking about.

On his X, he wrote, “Young players listening to @GilsArenaShow Mr. Jennings and Mr. Martin (Big Respect) are talking about winning TEAM basketball. Playing only for yourself will get you cut from most teams, and yes, Mr. Arenas (Respect), that assist counts on your head and your teammates. 😂😂

The conversation on the Arenas show was about 1v1 matchups and how to demonstrate who the dominant player was. Gilbert Arenas was very clear that, in any athlete’s mind, only the scoring part of the gameplay was considered. “I can’t see these points. You could have zero points and got 20 assists and to me, I stopped the f**k out. You didn’t score,” said Gilbert Arenas. There were three very distinct takes from the Arenas Crew.

Brandon Jennings made it clear that it’s not only about scoring but contributing with assists as well while Kenyon Martin was on the fence and agreed with both Arenas and Jennings. The guy with the show’s naming rights has always been vocal, comfortably stating the assist part is not a guarantee. And according to him, the player decided to pass the ball because of better defense, which does not demonstrate domination.

Just like Jennings, Isiah Thomas explained that the overall gameplay of a player and their contribution matters; just depending on one aspect to prove domination does no good. Recently, he called Magic Johnson a differentiator because of his no-look pass. So it’s clear what the 2x NBA champion considers as dominance. Previously too, Zeke has been vocal on X, but probably finds correcting Arenas and his crew as his full-time job.

The former Wizards star claimed that Michael Jordan was the only player to build his legacy from scratch. He also suggests that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson already had better teams in comparison. The Lakers, at the time, had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Norm Nixon to lead them. Plus, the Bean Town had 13 championships to its name already. So, with the head start, Gilbert Arenas felt MJ was the only one to build his dynasty.

Have an interesting take?

But to verify any MJ fact, we don’t have to wait long. Isiah Thomas replied on the clip shared on X with four words, “Not the only one.” Perhaps Arenas forgot about Zeke and his contributions to the motor city. He added two championships to the Pistons during his historic career.

Even though he did not include any teams, there are players from the past who have reformed their franchise. Or perhaps Zeke was tired of constant MJ praise and his domination, which he may feel sometimes is overblown. But ultimately, he shot down any Jordan talks while giving Gilbert Arenas a quick lesson or two.
