It was late in 1994 when the basketball legend and his wife Cookie Johnson decided to adopt a 3-day-old girl child Elisa. Johnson was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993-94 season. After Johnson led the Lakers to NBA championships in the ’80s, his return to the league as a coach for a brief time made waves. The veteran has three kids, sons Andre and EJ, and daughter Elisa.
After completing her education at Campbell Hall High School, the fashion designer went on to study Fashion and Business Management at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, FIT NYC.
In an interview with CR Fashion book, Elisa spoke about her upbringing and parents. She said, “My parents adopted me when I was 3 days old, but I never felt out of place growing up. I was completely immersed in the L.A. lifestyle for all of my childhood and teenage years: shopping, eating on Sunset Boulevard, occasional trips to Malibu and hanging out with all my closest friends.“

While her elder brother is occupied with his business, Earvin Johnson III is a socialite. Andre and his family mostly like to stay out of the public eye. He currently works as an executive vice president of business development at SimWin Sports, a digital sports league. Elisa has also featured in her brother EJ’s two reality TV shows, Rich Kids of Beverly Hills and EJNYC. And finally, in May 2021, she an official debut in the fashion world, and that too a powerful one.
Elisa Johnson’s new eyewear brand
After followers’ demands, the 30-year-old decided to take some help from her dad and start her own luxury label. With Johnson’s investment, Elisa made a debut with her eponymous brand. During a conversation with CFDA, Elisa also shared that it took time for Johnson to say yes to investment in her brand after he said initially no.
“I just had to pick a date because I had spent an entire year working on the brand after he initially told me no. I worked all of 2020 because it would’ve been foolish to launch a brand during the chaos of that year. I designed the Janes, the frames that have gone on to become our best sellers that same year,” Elisa explained during the conversation.
Fast forward to the future, her brand is one of the well-known luxury eyewear manufacturers. And she continues to thrive with her latest collection and show. Johnson and Cookie are proud of their daughter.
