Thousands of theories, and yet we were handed the most unexpected one. After much speculation, TNT announced a legal battle with the NBA. However, there’s still one more year left in the contract, which means TNT will continue its NBA coverage for now. Much has changed since TNT failed to acquire the new NBA rights. But will things remain the same in the studio, especially amidst the legal battle? Kenny Smith knows the answer.

In a conversation with the Houston Chronicle, The Jet shared that the freedom to be candid, which the crew enjoys on TNT, wouldn’t be the same if they were to move to a different rival network. Host Ernie Johnson has often mentioned how Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith’s unscripted antics on the show make it more interesting.

“Our job is to talk (about) the game and give insight and also give you insight about what’s going on behind the scenes with TNT. Like, “Hey, we’re not happy.” That’s part of what makes us different. I don’t think any other network would allow or want their talent to talk about things like that,” Smith said.

“We’re going to do it, no matter what happens. But again, we’ve had a great run. If it continues, it’ll be great,” Smith concluded, via Houston Chronicle. He believes that all four members will continue to share their insights on the games, both on-air and behind the scenes.

Smith also hinted that the four could take full control over the show, ensuring that the director, producers, and staff remain part of it. Barkley’s decision to stay with the TNT family, despite a $100 million offer from a different network, is also for the same reason. When asked about TNT failing to secure the NBA rights deal, Smith said he wasn’t surprised.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of TNT, offered to match Amazon’s deal for NBA broadcasting rights. Just in case you’re not aware, the deal was valued at $1.8 billion per year.

TNT wouldn’t be able to match NBC’s jaw-dropping $2.5 billion deal, so it targeted Amazon’s offer, which is more financially suitable.

However, the NBA rejected the deal, stating that the internet distribution agreement was exclusive to Amazon. Furthermore, WBD’s offer also includes broadcasting the games on TNT. WBD believes they have a strong case to match Amazon’s offer, leading to a potential legal battle.

“We have matched the Amazon offer, as we have a contractual right to do, and do not believe the NBA can reject it. We think they have grossly misinterpreted our contractual rights with respect to the 2025-26 season and beyond, and we will take appropriate action,” a TNT spokesperson said. The TNT drama is not yet over.
