Shaq in Fortnite—Genius marketing move or just another celebrity cash grab?

Even if it’s a bit subtle, Shaquille O’Neal has certainly dropped several hints showing his interest in Fortnite. Or at least, that’s how it seems. He’s been notably intrigued by the perks of the streaming business as well. Sharp-eyed fans quickly picked up on the obvious references to the game in his work, especially when he takes on his DJ Diesel persona. Was all of this a hint toward a potential collaboration with the company? The latest Fortnite leak suggests it might be.

A source has shared hot news about Shaq teaming up with the $31.5 billion brand. His previous 3D music video for “Chaos,” featuring Chicago native GAWNE, caught attention with its stunning visuals. It quickly became a favorite among the fans. But what really stood out was its subtle reference to Fortnite.

Many fans believed that the video’s thrilling theme was inspired by the game. One fan even wrote, “I need Shaq in Fortnite now. As a Lakers fan, I’d buy it so fast. Also, this is a banger!” While fans saw the hype, O’Neal likely saw the business potential in it as well.

His latest event in Toronto in September 2024 further sparked speculation, as the theme appeared to be another reference to the video game. An animated Thanos Shaq who dazzled the crowd at Toronto makes more sense if we look at it this way.

Even Shaq’s millionaire son, Myles, was also part of the trend. Myles once dropped a preview of his unreleased song “All I Need” for fans to check out. There’s more to it. But if true, how much of a blockbuster could Shaq’s collaboration with Fortnite be?

When can we expect the collaboration?

“I got a call from some of my homies over at Fortnite. They’re making a new map, ‘Super End Game.’ And we did the music for it,” Myles said about his collaboration back in April.

Have an interesting take?

Epic Games is already known for collaborating with sports stars like Lewis Hamilton, so a special collaboration with the Los Angeles Lakers would be a great reach. The company has previously worked with NBA players Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell. Going back to 2021, the company also launched skins for all 30 NBA teams.

As per Fortnite leaker @ShiinaBR, the collaboration is expected to be announced between October 2-4 this year. If the rumors are true, the 4x NBA champ has been dropping hints in the days leading up to the announcement. Both O’Neal and the brand had been tight-lipped about it, but it’s only a matter of time until we find out about the rest.
