Is Vince Carter's move to NFL ownership a game-changer for basketball stars in football?

The world of basketball and pro football have long been intertwined, with crossover appeal that extends far beyond the court and field. Remember when tight ends like Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham, who showed their basketball skills into football stardom, to dual-sport phenoms like Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, the crossover appeal between these leagues runs deep. Now just a few days after the HOF ceremony, a new revelation has been made regarding Vince Carter.

According to a new post by Sportico on X, it has been revealed that Vince Carter is ready to make his stint in the NFL not as a player but as a minority owner. “EXCLUSIVE: Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Jozy Altidore are in talks to buy a minority stake of the @BuffaloBills. The Bills, owned by the Pegula family, have been actively courting new investors. The team is worth $5.08 billion, according to Sportico’s numbers,” read the caption of the post.

It was quite understandable that this move was going to happen. The Buffalo Bills club which was owned by the Pegula family was looking for investors and earlier this year they had even hired the capital marketing company Allen and Co. to help the club with the sale of 25% non-controllable stake. However Carter and McGrady aren’t the only ones who are behind the role of a minority owner. They are also joined by the U.S. Soccer star Jozy Altidore. Carter and McGrady’s interest in the Bills is particularly intriguing given their shared history. Both hailing from Florida, the two were briefly cousins by marriage and have maintained a friendship throughout their careers. Their on-court chemistry, evident during their time as teammates with the Toronto Raptors, could potentially translate into a formidable partnership in the boardroom.

Also the Buffalo Bills have seen improvement in recent years under the leadership of quarterback Josh Allen. The team’s current ownership, led by Terry and Kim Pegula, has steered the Bills to six consecutive playoff appearances and back-to-back AFC East titles from 2020. The addition of Carter and McGrady to the ownership group could bring fresh perspectives and star power to an already thriving organization.

However, it was also revealed that the deal ultimately may not happen. Why? A representative of the Bulls had informed that attempts to communicate with Carter, McGrady and Altidore via their agents weren’t successful and that the negotiations are in a standstill. While details of the reported deal remain scarce, the mere possibility of Carter and McGrady joining the ranks of NFL owners has sent ripples through both the basketball and football communities.  However, there was another indication from the players that they were going for the minority stake in Buffalo Bills.
