The FIBA World Cup 2023 kicked off the week with some of the remarkable athletes showcasing their skills. The power and energy at the FIBA are quite palpable among the fans. It provides a platform for current and former NBA players to play for their country. As the USA official squad came together clad in pristine jerseys and shining sneakers, fans might be interested in knowing a bit more about the sneakers.
Like every time, Nike is the ubiquitous name when it comes to basketball sneakers. While Nike sponsors Team USA, there were other sportswear brands as well that caught the attention. After flaunting several other popular brands, Brooklyn Nets player Cameron Jordan Johnson paid homage to the Lakers’ legend, Kobe Bryant.

Cameron Jordan Johnson paid tribute to Kobe Bryant
Paying tribute to the Lakers legend, Johnson wore Mambacita Kobe 4 Protro on the World stage. ‘Nick DePaula’ a Twitter handle that updates several NBA, WNBA, and NIL endorsements deals, and the footwear industry posted a closer snap of Johnson’s shoes. They captioned the post as: “Cam Johnson is wearing the “Mambacita” Kobe 4 Proto at the FIBA World Cup.”

When you take a closer look at the sneakers, you will notice the word “GIGI” embellished on the back. It is a tribute to Kobe’s daughter Gianna Bryant. The Nike Kobe 4 Protro is relaunched thanks to Nike’s collaboration with Vanessa Bryant. But this time, the shoes pay homage to Gianna. The 13-year-old passed away in the tragic incident that took place back in 2020, alongside Kobe. As a tribute to Gianna, the shoes are called ‘Mambacita’ (Gianna’s nickname).

Cameron Johnson’s flashy and expensive kicks
Johnson has flaunted Michael Jordan’s CP3.XII and Kevin Durant‘s Nike KD 15 before. And for the FIBA World Cup, the 27-year-old represents Nike again. Back in 2019, Johnson was drafted as the eleventh pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Following his $108 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets, Johnson has joined hands with Team USA as a member. He is the only Pitt player to join the FIBA roster. Alongside Anthony Edwards and Josh Hart, the former Pitt star player will represent the USA on the World stage.
