Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union are exactly the people who fall into the ‘power couple’ category. When Union turned 50, she decided to take a trip with her loved ones and make a TV series out of the journey. Union wanted to understand her roots better. This made her go to various parts of Africa with the 3x NBA champion. On a particular stop in the trip, Wade was quick to shut down Gabrielle Union when she asked for a sign of his love.

Both are influential in their own rights. But their successful careers have not stepped in the way of them showing their love for each other.

Dwyane Wade found time for his other love

During the trip to experience Africa, a destination they surely had to visit was Ghana. When they reached Ghana, both Wade and Union were given Ghanaian names. The Miami Heat legend was given the name ‘Kwesi Safo‘. Union was given the name ‘Akosua Safo‘. The name has significance. Even though they were born 10 years apart, both Wade and Union were born on a Sunday.

‘Kwesi’ and ‘Akosua’ both mean the same thing. It means ‘Born on a Sunday‘. The last name ‘Safo’ means ‘Warrior‘. Wade felt proud of his name, as it signified a protector of the family.

Wade said, “To be given the name Kwesi Safo really meant something to me. Because it was given to me as someone who was a protector, you know, of his family. And I was like, I immediately had my chest out. I got up like this and so wanted to kind of go and ink that.“

So when they reached Cape Town during their trip, Wade decided to get a tattoo of the ‘Kwesi Safo’ on his wrist. Along with that, Wade also got a tattoo of the South African flag. Union was with him in the tattoo shop. She jokingly asked him if he was getting a tattoo of her name to prove his love. To that, Wade replied, “Yeah, it’s called a wedding ring.” This upset Union but left Wade and the others in the studio in splits.

They have been married for 9 years now. Union wanted to one-up him, so she asked to see the ring. This made Wade laugh and say that it was in their locker. But actually, Wade already has a tattoo of her initials on his wrist. It’s a heart symbol followed by ‘GU‘. He got this after her 50th birthday.
