While the ’90s Chicago Bulls remain the hallmark of professional sports, one name remains underrated. Even though the stars, MJ and Scottie Pippen, got their flowers, one name was crucial to their run. Ask any basketball fan, and they’ll tell you about the genius of Phil Jackson.
Steve Kerr, John Paxson, Ron Harper, and other role players excelled because of Jackson’s style. The revolutionary triangle offense catapulted the Bulls to 6, and the Los Angeles Lakers to 5 championships under Phil. As a result, his name remains synonymous with winning.
But Jackson was also extremely close to Jordan. Therefore, talking to him about retirement was never going to be easy. In the book, Jerry Reinsdorf, owner of the Chicago Bulls since 1985, detailed his journey. “I was at a dinner and David Falk comes over to me and says, ‘Michael wants to retire’…Michael says he’s going to retire, says he can’t do it anymore…He said he wanted to play baseball… But I said he had to talk to Phil before making a final decision.”

The reasons for MJ saying “can’t do it anymore”?were obvious. Whether it was the media’s scrutiny of his gambling habits, or losing his father, his time in the media’s eye left a burden on him. But, in that fateful meeting with Jackson, Jordan found hope. More importantly, he found a voice to trust again.

Jackson continued Jerry’s description,?”I told him in the minutes we had together, ‘You have a gift that nobody else has…It’s a drug almost to watch you play basketball. And to take that away is really something that is not just your own, but it belongs to the public, almost.’ I don’t know if that ever had anything to do with him coming back. But it did develop a sense of trust. I knew he needed the liberty to go without me begging him to stay. We had to go on.”

That trust, between player and coach, that first let Michael trust his teammates at Jackson’s behest, became the foundation for a return. As the story goes, MJ made his triumphant return two years later, more popular than ever, then proceeded to win 3 more championships, all with Jackson. A coach, he grew to trust, that trusted him in return.
