Recently, the 51-year-old unveiled one such experience from 40 years ago. A television film, released in 1983 is still etched into her mind, and on the 40th anniversary of its release, she joined other movie buffs on the internet to talk about their shared experience.

The 51-year-old is a well-known face and has a notable body of work behind her. Even today, Union is an active actor and has been featured in movies and TV shows regularly. As for her connection to the world of basketball, she is married to one of the biggest superstars of the game, Dwyane Wade. Union has been an actor since 1993, but her most horrifying cinema experience goes a decade back from when she herself became an actor. Recently, she joined the internet movie buffs in detailing one of her most harrowing experiences while watching a film.
An account on X, dedicated to the ‘Gen X’ers’ as they like to call themselves, posted about the movie The Day After. This ‘television film’ was released on 20th November 1983 and was one of its kind at the time. Despite its rather gory nature involving nuclear warfare, the movie broke several records. When it was aired for the first time on TV, over 100 million people watched it in nearly 39 million households. Besides that, it received a 46 rating and a 62% share of audience and was the seventh-highest-rated non-sports show. The film held on to this record till 2009.

Gabrielle Union’s response
On the 40th anniversary of the film, the post asked the ‘Gen X’ers’ to reveal their feelings after the first watch. The post asked “Fellow Gen X’ers.. “The Day After” was aired 40 years ago today.. for those who can remember watching it in real time, what’s your thoughts on it, looking back?” Gabrielle, 11 years old at the time of the release of this film, unveiled the fear she experienced.

Union said that she was “terrified” while watching it for the first time. She said, “All the kids in elementary school were traumatized.” Despite it being a traumatizing experience for some, the film was massively successful. It won two Emmy Awards out of 10 nominations.
