EVANSTON, ILLINOIS – FEBRUARY 12: Dikembe Mutombo looks on during the game between the Northwestern Wildcats and the Michigan Wolverines at Welsh-Ryan Arena on February 12, 2020 in Evanston, Illinois.
They didn’t call him “Mount Mutombo” for nothing. Dikembe Mutombo stood tall, literally and figuratively, as one of the most dominant defenders the NBA has ever seen. Drafted fourth overall in 1991 by the Denver Nuggets, he played 18 unforgettable seasons. He earned four Defensive Player of the Year awards, became the second all-time leader in blocked shots, and got eight All-Star selections. Every trip to the rim came with a warning: Mutombo was waiting.
Off the court, his legacy was just as towering. In 1997, he founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation. To uplift healthcare and education in his native Congo. This led to the creation of the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital near Kinshasa in 2007. A champion for the Special Olympics and a Global Ambassador for basketball, he was honored globally for his humanitarian work. Sadly, the world lost this gentle giant on September 30, 2024, when he passed away from brain cancer.
Recently, his family shared a post on his official Instagram page. The post intimated the fans of a ‘celebration of life event’ in his honor. The post was captioned, “The family of NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo, who passed away on September 30, 2024, invites the public to a Celebration of Life event commemorating his remarkable life and enduring legacy.” urging the fans to attend the event and commemorate an ever lasting legacy left behind by the NBA legend.
