In the world of basketball, only a few players have embodied the term “Grit and Grind” quite like Tony Allen. Tony was the guy who would go flying for loose balls, take the toughest defensive assignments head-on, and talk as much trash as necessary to torment the opponent’s mind. But the ever prepared Tony Allen was left puzzled when he was suddenly found guarding another superstar Kevin Durant.
So hold up, and picture this. It is the 2010-11 season, and the Grizzlies are preparing to face the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tony Allen is rearing to go. The plan seemed clear, Rudy Gay, the team’s mercurial wing would guard Durant, but then right before tip-off, there was a major plot twist.
In a conversation with the Club 520 Podcast on YouTube, Tony Allen shared a hilarious anecdote where he was unprepared but still “cooked” Kevin Durant. He said, “I had some minutes against Kevin Durant…I didn’t study for him, I was doing film on James Harden” meaning he was not prepared for Kevin Durant but gearing up to face James Harden.

Then he said, “Then I look up it’s 38 on the clock and they like wiping off the board and putting Tony name next to Kevin Durant name. I take my headphones and look at Rudy, I’m like Rudy you ain’t playing? Rudy like no, he trying to be quiet….I’m like no hold on man I ain’t study for dude you feel I’m saying like…I put my headphones back on Boom, go out there man, I had a solid game, like 27 rebounds… I was hot though.. I was still hot at Rudy I’m like Mother…he played me.” highlighting the anger he had over Rudy Gay but also the comical but thrilling nature of the plot twist in the game.
After the game, Tony was on cloud nine and gave birth to his persona, giving an interview that would change the culture of the franchise. Let us look at what happened.
