Kevin Garnett fans, it’s finally happening. A decade-long feud might actually be coming to an end. The Minnesota Timberwolves have seen 12 playoff appearances in franchise history. But honestly speaking, none were as electric as the eight consecutive playoff runs with KG leading the charge. A player who gave everything to a franchise deserves his flowers. And what couldn’t happen 10 years ago, well, it just might be on the horizon now.
Kevin Garnett’s journey with the Minnesota Timberwolves started back in 1995 when they drafted him fifth overall. At just 19, he became the first player since 1975 to jump straight from high school to the NBA. For 12 straight years, KG gave everything to the franchise until he was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2007. But in 2015, he made his way back to Minnesota. And that’s when the drama started.
Reports indicate that Kevin Garnett had an informal agreement with then-owner Glen Taylor and the late Flip Saunders, who served as both GM and head coach. The plan was that after retirement, KG would take on a front-office role with the Timberwolves. However, following Saunders’ untimely passing in 2015, the agreement was reportedly disregarded. Garnett didn’t take this insult lightly. He publicly called out Taylor, saying, “I won’t forgive Glen for that” and even went as far as calling him a “snake.” His frustration was so deep that he refused to have his No. 21 jersey retired by the franchise.

But now things might finally change. With Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore officially taking over the Timberwolves in a $1.5 billion deal, there’s real hope this decade-long feud could end. After all, KG’s issue was never with the Wolves, it was with Taylor. He’s always loved the team, and the NBA world believes this could be his long-awaited homecoming. Even NBACentral chimed in, posting on X: “Now that they’re under new ownership, the Timberwolves will try to rekindle their relationship with Kevin Garnett and potentially retire his jersey, per @ShamsCharania”

The post hints at a potential reconciliation, with Garnett possibly agreeing to have his jersey retired. However, there’s still no word on whether the new owners will fulfill his long-standing desire for a front-office position. So, now the question is, Will A-Rod and Marc Lore make it happen? If you were in Garnett’s shoes, would you let bygones be bygones? Or should Minnesota prove its loyalty first?

A closer look at Kevin Garnett’s bitter standoff with Wolves owner Glen Taylor
According to various reports, Kevin Garnett’s fallout with Glen Taylor may have started long before 2015. Some sources strongly suggest that it traces back to 2005 when the Timberwolves fired Flip Saunders during a rough season. Garnett, who always held Saunders in the highest regard, voiced his frustration with the team’s leadership on TNT, particularly Kevin McHale, after the firing.

Then again, in 2014, the Wolves brought Saunders back as head coach. Not surprisingly, it was Flip who convinced Garnett to return to Minnesota ahead of the 2015 trade deadline. At the time, Reports indicated that the organization promised Garnett a future role. But after Saunders’ tragic passing, that promise disappeared.
And for this, KG made his frustrations public when he told Shams Charania of the Athletic: “Glen and I had an understanding before Flip died, and when Flip died, that understanding went with Flip. For that, I won’t forgive Glen. I won’t forgive him for that. I thought he was a straight-up person, straight-up businessman, and when Flip died, everything went with him.”
But now, with new ownership in place, things might finally change. The dark cloud of the past is lifting, and there’s real hope we’ll see KG’s iconic No. 21 hanging in the rafters where it belongs.
