Only a handful of players have done what Udonis Haslem has done in his career. Haslem is one of the three players in NBA history to play 20 years with the same team. After dedicating the past 20 years of his life to the organization, he announced his retirement as a player earlier this year. Not having Haslem as a veteran presence on the court is a major loss for the Heat, who were heading in a good direction with Jimmy Butler.

But this won’t be the case anymore, as the Miami Heat recently announced that UD is going to be playing an important role on the team, but this time in the front office.

He has been there since the beginning and has been part of all the championships in the team’s history. Now Haslem is stepping into the front office to use his years of experience to help the players. According to ESPN, he has three main duties in this role. This includes working with the coaching staff, mentoring both the main and G League players of the team, and working in the community as a representative of the organization.

Haslem was born and raised in Miami. He embodies the Heat culture and is an integral part of the team. UD was already playing a mentorship role for the team. In his final eight seasons with the Heat, he only played 102 games.

He was a veteran presence on the team who was always looking to impart his wisdom to the players and motivate them. But this did not end well last year during a game, as things got out of hand.

The altercation with Jimmy Butler

In March 2022, the Heat were going through a rough patch. After losing five of their last seven matches, the players were desperate and on edge. As Haslem was the embodiment of Heat culture, he tried to motivate his team on the bench during a timeout.

But the talk quickly escalated as Jimmy Butler did not like what Haslem was saying, and this led to them getting into a confrontation. Haslem even threatened to beat up Jimmy Butler. The two had to be separated by the rest of the teammates, and Eric Spoelstra was seen to be visibly upset with the incident, as he threw his clipboard on the floor.
