Should Team USA drop Joel Embiid after his lackluster performance? Is he really worth the hype?

Even Team USA’s consecutive wins in exhibition games have failed to cover for Joel Embiid‘s subpar performance. And it’s not just Embiid but even Steve Kerr, who has been facing backlash. The majority demand from Kerr is to replace the 7x All-Star in the starting five. But former NBA star Kenyon Martin believes the Philadelphia 76ers star should be removed from Team USA’s roster altogether.

Appearing on a recent episode of Gil’s Arena, Martin stated, “They should send Embiid’s a** back to Philadelphia and get ready for the damn season… He shouldn’t be playing, man. Not a good fit. Whatever the reasons are, whatever the case, he should not be playing…” Notably, Embiid has started in all three exhibition games so far, averaging just 7.6 points per game.

The criticism of the 7x All Star is not just for his performance but also for being out of shape. On the same grounds, NBA champ Rahseed Wallace also earlier stated Embiid should return to Philly and focus on the upcoming season. “In this world, this NBA title is more important than getting that gold medal… If I’m the Sixers, I definitely would have protested,” he said on his podcast.

Rasheed backed his opinion by highlighting how the 76ers have kept Joel Embiid as the focal point of all their recent actions. This included their desire to surround him and Tyrese Maxey with another star, for which the franchise acquired Paul George. Wallace believes if anything happens to the 7x All Star, then all this planning and actions would be for nothing.

Meanwhile, Steve Kerr seems in no mood to remove Embiid from the starting five. Notably, the 76ers star scored 8 points on 2-of-8 shooting against Serbia. But Kerr still stated, “Whether you agree with it or not, that’s the way it’s going to be,” on Embiid, continuing in the starting five.

During his appearance on ‘Undisputed’, Skip Bayless stated Embiid has no hope of getting back in shape any time soon. Further calling him overweight, Bayless went to the extent of terming the 76ers star as a “liability.” Meanwhile, he appreciated Davis for playing so hard for Team USA.

Earlier, ESPN analyst and former NBA star Kendrick Perkins had also commented on Joel’s fitness. Doing so, he expressed his belief of Davis to be an option in the starting line-up. “I’m wondering when is he (Steve Kerr) gonna put Anthony Davis is the starting lineup and take out Joel Embiid,” Perk said

It is worth mentioning Davis has been proficient on both the ends so far in all three exhibition games. In the three games so far, the 9x All Star has averaged 11.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game coming off the bench.
