How many lives were upturned overnight, their stories rewritten in ashes? As raging wildfires tear through Los Angeles, consuming over 12,000 structures and displacing more than 130,000 people, resilience is the only beacon. Amidst this devastation, Charles Barkley shared his reaction to the tragedy and recounted his first steps after hearing the news.

The Inside the NBA crew didn’t shy away from addressing the catastrophe. The House of Highlights YouTube channel recently shared their emotional take, where Charles Barkley admitted his heartbreak. “You know, it’s just a really awful, sad situation,” he said. “And obviously, the first person I called was Kenny.” However, He also feels regret for not checking on other NBA friends. “I should have checked on Reggie Miller and Kenny Parker.”

His vulnerability shone through, not just in his words, but in how deeply the situation weighed in on him. “Man, it’s just sad… just watching from a distance, it makes it just, nothing you can do,” he added.

On the other side, Reggie Miller wasn’t just thinking about his own home but also about his community. A few weeks prior, he posted heartfelt messages to firefighters battling the blaze, acknowledging the daunting scale of the work. Over 1,500 firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire, which forced countless evacuations and shutdowns across affected neighborhoods.

“Real heroes don’t always wear capes!!!!” Miller shared on Instagram, pouring gratitude into his words. “Y’all are truly badasses who put it on the line every single day. God Bless you guys… #FirefightersForTheWin.”

However, even in sorrow, Barkley didn’t lose sight of the bigger picture. He’s certain the collective power of goodwill will prevail, hinting at plans to contribute meaningfully.

When something happened like hurricanes, you know, Florida, Texas, wherever, man, there’s so many great people in this country, in this world, and we’re gonna band together,” Barkley shared on the video. “I wanna find a way to do something that’s gonna make sure that I can do something really positive to help, but it’s gonna be so many great things come out of this.”

Not only did Charles Barkley express his determination to help, but the NBA and its players have also rallied to support wildfire victims in Los Angeles. In an extraordinary act of solidarity, the league and the NBPA have pledged $1 million to relief efforts.

This donation will assist organizations like the World Central Kitchen and the American Red Cross, both of which are already providing food, shelter, and aid to those devastated by the disaster. According to Pacers writer Scott Agness, the basketball community wants to lead by example, ensuring help reaches those who need it most.

Sure, $1 million seems like a drop in the ocean compared to the estimated $135 billion in damages caused by the fires. But this heartfelt gesture speaks louder than numbers. The NBA’s initiative follows the NFL’s significant relief efforts, including a $5 million fund announced by Commissioner Roger Goodell. Teams like the Vikings, Texans, Rams, and Chargers have come together to lend their support, proving that sports leagues understand their role in healing a shattered community.

Even individual efforts are shining through. Lakers star Anthony Davis personally donated $20,000 to help team videographer Rohan Ali, whose family lost their home. Acts like this embody Barkley’s vision of collective action. If more people follow suit, the weight of wildfire victims might feel just a little lighter; although, they can’t erase the devastating memories from their hearts.

Hopefully, they can!
