Keion Henderson's resilience after the hurricane—Is this the kind of spirit we need more of today?

Anyone who followed Shaunie Henderson on Instagram would often cap off the week with the highlight of the media mogul’s posts. Shaquille O’Neal’s ex-wife is now the first lady of the Houston Lighthouse Church. That means she not only leads Sunday services and outreach, but she’s also living it up with fellow parishioners, whether it’s true dance challenges or acts of charity. But these posts have been limited in the past month since Hurricane Beryl ravaged Houston. The north campus in Humble was impacted severely, leaving the church in extreme need of rebuild.

After Shaunie’s first few updates, her husband, Keion Henderson, revealed the severity of the situation on his YouTube channel. He walked into the building in safety gear due to how dangerous it was. His purpose in giving a firsthand account of the church’s situation is to ask for support while also setting the record straight on misconceptions.

Firstly, he clarified that this is not Keion Henderson’s Church. He repeated it’s a community organization and they’re pulling through. Secondly, there’s a false assumptions going around the Internet that either the church administration didn’t get the building insured, or they already received a bailout for the reconstruction.

Don’t believe the hype, don’t believe that an insurance company has dropped us a check and everything is fine,” the pastor revealed on Keion Henderson TV. He clarified that the insurance payout is much lesser due to the depreciation of the building and it’s nearly not enough for the reconstruction. Moreover, they still have to jump through hoops to get the insurance money at all. “As your leader, I won’t stand for it. I will fight with every tooth and every nail that I have to make sure that we are made whole,” Keion promised.

Henderson also corrected misinterpreted statements in the local media about him allegedly soliciting $4.4 million in all. He said that he hasn’t done the math at all and is requesting people donate within their capacity. He hopes this way they can bounce back debt-free.

Challenges ahead for Keion Henderson

When Hurricane Beryl first hit, the roof at the Lighthouse Church, especially the sanctuary, had collapsed. Shaunie revealed to her Instagram followers that the building was flooded by at least three feet of water and the electricity situation was extremely dicey. A month later now, the water damage has gotten worse.

The pastor confirmed that mildew and rot have set in and compromised the structure. There’s no ventilation and the building is very warm on the inside. There’s a lot more damage and overall unsafe for use. Although the Lighthouse Church has been around for 15 years, the campus has been in use for roughly seven years and now demands a complete rebuild.

A rebuild is a significantly expensive project. At this moment, other churches have lent their support to the Lighthouse congregation. They also continue their services like support groups and a back-to-school project through the local community center. Donors all over the country have sent help to keep them afloat.

Keion Henderson was extremely grateful for the support so far and hopes the generosity continues towards the rebuild. He provided all donation channels under his YouTube channel, where he continues to give updates.
