Who wouldn’t love a rule that gets you a free meal? You’re not alone. Even $45 million rich Steve Kerr would agree with you. The former NBA player hilariously went to great lengths to get a free meal from one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches. But how? In an episode of The OGs Podcast, Josh Richardson revealed Coach Pop’s habit of paying for the Spurs players’ meals whenever he bumped into someone or during trips.

Kerr, who spent the last year of his career with the Spurs, would often look for where the coach was headed for dinner. While it seemed like a free meal for the others, it felt more like paying family members to the players and the coach. Another companion in Kerr’s mischief was former Duke legend Danny Ferry. This was revealed by Spurs writer Jeff McDonald.

“This is a long-standing rule. Back in the day, Steve Kerr and Danny Ferry famously used to find out where Pop was headed for dinner, get there ahead of time and then eat for free,” McDonald wrote on X. Luckily, this rule still applies to the former players.

Apart from McDonald’s confirmation, Kerr also confessed to it. It seems this was something that all the San Antonio Spurs players were guilty of, including Richardson, who also detailed Gregg Popovich’s kindness.

More Spurs players who are guilty in this prank

Richardson recalled his first dinner with his teammates, Gorgui Dieng and Keldon Johnson. He described how the former kept looking sideways until finally yelling, “hell yeah,” in relief upon seeing Coach Pop enter the restaurant.

“We almost started following him around cuz he got a rule if he sees you out at dinner on the road trip, he paid for it,” Richardson said during his appearance on the podcast. This might also be the reason behind Popovich’s success in the league as a coach while maintaining a great bond with the players. Well, even if they are guilty, the trio didn’t take advantage of it as much as Kerr.

The head coach of the Warriors played 15 seasons in the NBA. For his last season in 2002-2003, he joined the Spurs and won his 5th NBA Championship title. While it’s funny how Kerr and Ferry used to get their coach to pay for their dinner and involved him in their silly pranks, it makes us wonder whether the Warriors coach practices a similar rule for his players too.
