Did Scotty Pippen Jr. deserve the MVP, or was the snub justified? Let's hear your thoughts!

Memphis may have lost the Summer League final to Miami Heat, but Grizzlies’ Scotty Pippen Jr. shone differently. The 23-year-old player showed proficiency in his gameplay on both ends of the floor this summer league. As a result, majority opinion considered him as the frontrunner for the MVP title. But it seems luck did not favor him, as he lost both the MVP title and the chance to win the finals against Heat. Already disappointed with her son’s loss, Larsa Pippen could not help but claim that her son deserved more.

Taking to her official account on X, Larsa shared the post by Grind City Media. “Stats don’t lie @spippenjr was the MVP of summer league,” she wrote. Larsa Pippen has been a constant support for her son, ensuring her presence at all the games in the league. And it seems Pip Jr.’s gameplay not getting official recognition with the MVP award was unfair. And thus the re-post, where Grind City Media’s Jessica Benson emphasized on why Scotty Pippen Jr. deserved the MVP award over Jalen Wilson.

Benson argued that Pippen Jr. had a statistical edge over Wilson except for two departments — points per game and shooting percentage from beyond the arc. “Jalen Wilson, 21 points. Scottie Pippen, junior, 20 points. Okay, slight edge to Jalen Wilson, but Scottie Pippen junior, five rebounds. Wilson, four rebounds. Pippen eight assist, Wilson one assist,” Jess said. She also pointed out the fact that the Grizzlies guard made it to the All-Summer League First Team. Meanwhile, the Nets forward made it to the All-Summer League Second Team.

Concluding her claims, Benson stated the ex-Chicago Bulls star’s son got “snubbed” in the MVP race. One of the X users also seemed to be in support of Jessica’s claims. “Still trying to figure out how the guy that made 2nd team wins MVP over the guy that made first team, that had better stats and led his team to the championship,” he wrote on Larsa Pippen’s post. A looking closer at the stat-line of both the players says the call was indeed close with Pip Jr.’s notable upper hand in defense and game making.

Have an interesting take?

Notably, the 23-year-old player from the Nets averaged 21.8 points, with 47.3 shooting percentage from the field, and 55 from the 3-point line. Whereas, the Grizzlies star averaged 21.5 points, with 46.1 field goal percentage and 32 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

Apart from this, Wilson also had an edge over Pippen Jr. in rebounds (5 RPG vs 4.6 RPG). Now, even though the difference may not be stark, it is not non-existent. However, the departments where Scotty Pippen Jr. leads, he does it with a huge margin. The 23-year-old from Grizzlies averaged 8.7 assists per game, showcasing his game-making proficiency. Meanwhile, Jalen Wilson averaged just 1 assist per game throughout his summer league run.

Additionally, Pip Jr. also emerged as one of the leading defenders from the league. “I am the best defender in the Summer League,” he said. Pip Jr. closed at the league with 3.3 steals per game — second highest in the league, sharing the spot with Cam Whitmore, and Jacob Gilyard. From what it seems, both the players had an impressive run at the league. And although Pippen Jr. was being seen as the frontrunner in the MVP race, Wilson cannot be termed as ‘non-deserving’ of the title.
